GLORIA'S ABBREVIATED RADIO BIO

In 1988, I began my career in talk radio on WANT 990/AM Radio (now defunct) in Richmond, Virginia. Preston T. Brown (P.T.) was the program manager at the time--which was key...because, years later, when P.T. became President and General Manager of his own radio station, he gave me the opportunity to continue my journalism work on radio.

In 1996, as President and General Manager of WCLM 1450/AM Radio, P. T. gave me the opportunity to produce and host my own talk show. In December 2005, after years of working in broadcast journalism, I obtained a Doctorial Degree in Christian Journalism (D.C.J.).

During my years in talk radio, in addition to planning/hosting several public forums for the community on a variety of hot-button issues, I have explored a myriad of topics and interviewed numerous intriguing guests, nationally, and even internationally. A partial listing of some of my high-profile guests are: Don Beyer, [former] Lieutenant Governor of Virginia; James 'Jim' Gilmore, [former] Governor of Virginia; Colonel William Bryant, Governor's Cabinet Member/first African American Secretary of Education in Virginia; Allegra McCullough, Governor's Cabinet Member/first African American Assistant Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and [former] Director of the Virginia Department of Minority Business Enterprise; Virginia State Senators, Benjamin Lambert, III and Henry Marsh, III; best-selling authors such as Leslie Esdaile Banks, Bebe Moore Campbell, and Sam Greenlee, screen writer of the hit book and movie, ' The Spook Who Sat by the Door', Sam Greenlee; Glenn Ford, co-publisher of the popular e-zine, Black Commentator and co-founder of the television program, America's Black Forum; Charles Dutton, acclaimed actor and producer of the hit sitcom 'Roc', and actor Carl Gordon (played the father in the sitcom, 'Roc');  Melba Moore, legendary R&B recording artist and Tony-award winning actress; and, Bill Duke, director, actor and film-maker/producer; and numerous best-selling authors.

To encourage reading and oratory development in my community, in September of 2004, I initiated a Radio Book Club called, Voices from the Drum (VFTD), which airs each  month in various weekly time slots; and the Radio Book Club became an immediate favorite with my audience. To-date, I am honored and humbled to say that the VFTD Radio Book Club continues presenting charismatic, prolific authors and some stimulating dialogue.  For a complete list of authors who have shared their stories and their lives with me on the VFTD Radio Book Club, please visit the 'Archived VFTD Shows' page on this web site.

In July 2007, after joining Simon & Schuster's Book Reader Advisory Board, I began reviewing selected newly-released books.  You can read excerpts from some of my Simon & Schuster Reviews, which are occasionally posted on my 'Radio Book Club' page.
